There is a wide range of PCI Express applications that are only available in the desktop form factor PCI Express card. However, many users of laboratory instrumentation, audio/video editing equipment, high-end graphics processors, multi-display systems for banking, and other PCI Express applications would benefit from being able to use these cards with their laptop PC.

ViExpress Box is an external expansion chassis for using PCI Express cards with a laptop PC through the ExpressCard slot.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

It has one PCI Express slot and offers one USB port on the back of the unit. The unit is powered with an external 72W power supply — enough for power hungry PCI Express cards. The box is easily opened for installing your PCI Express application and connects to the laptop PC by simply inserting the captive ExpressCard module into the slot.

After data gathering or editing, your workbench or studio set-up can remain in place while you unplug your laptop PC and continue your work at a more comfortable location: your office, at home, at the local coffee house, wherever you can use your mobile PC.

With ViExpress Box, you can share PCIe instrumentation cards. Multiple input, high bandwidth data acquisition cards are expensive. Imagine being able to share these cards from PC to PC without opening up a desktop computer and handling the card. You can do this with ViExpress Box.

The power to the card is controlled by the laptop’s power state. When the laptop power is turned off, either from powering down or in a sleep mode, power is removed from the card just as if it was installed in the computer. This saves power and keeps the card from generating heat when the remainder of the system is idle.

Since some PCI Express cards do get hot while in operation, ViExpress Box includes a temperature controlled fan for managing the heat generated by the card. The size of the fan permits it to move enough air for cooling while generating very little noise. In addition, operating at a lower temperature will extend the life of the card.

“Magic Cable” ensures PCI Express signal quality by having no discontinuities from the ExpressCard edge to the impedance matched termination on the ViExpress Box backplane end. Unlike using solutions with connectors at either, or both, ends of the cable, “Magic Cable” delivers the PCIe bus to  ViExpress Box without the need for additional components to clean up the signal. Also, “Magic Cable” is very rugged. It will withstand mechanical stresses at the expansion box and ExpressCard ends without sustaining damage to the integrity to the busses inside. Available in half length (167.65mm) and full length (312mm) PCI Express CEM versions. If you will be using half length PCIe cards, you can opt for a smaller, lighter version of ViExpress Box.

If you would like to use ViExpress Box with a desktop PC, an adapter is available that adds an ExpressCard slot to your computer.
